When others say you can’t – What do you say?

Hi everyone

When others say I can’t, I say I can, and I do it.

One of the key messages I took away from the Business Showcase South West, was that all successful entrepreneurs have one thing in common, they turn their ideas into reality when everyone says they can’t. This was clearly stated in Karen Brady’s speech.

If someone says you can’t do something that you want to do, what do you say?

I recently took this photo of a horse drawn carriage. A couple were inside the carriage, wearing their wedding outfits. Presumably, they had just been married.

What sprung to my mind were two things. Some people say you can’t have a horse drawn carriage for your wedding day, that’s not a reality. Well they certainly made it their reality. Second thing, some say you can’t outrun a horse and he has done just that.

When someone says you can’t, know that you can do anything you set your mind to.

I have a saying; there are no rules other than the ones you set for yourself. Dare to be different, embrace your quirky and do whatever you want to do. As my Grandma always says; there is no such word as can’t. She is my hero and a true inspiration.

What’s his story? – Let your imagination run riot

Hi everyone

Most weeks when I walk to work to go to my day job, I see this man making dogs out of sand.

I think they are beautiful and he is very talented.

As a writer, I often think, what’s his story? Why is he making dogs out of sand?

Could it be because…….

He is grieving for pets that have passed away.

He has a love of dogs.

He is obsessed with dogs.

He was not allowed any dogs as a child.

He can’t have any dogs now.

He has been reincarnated but was once a dog with his own family of dogs.

He believes the sand makes the dogs come to life and they talk to him.

He finds it a form of therapy away from the problems at home.

He is preparing for a competition to create the best dog sand statues, in the quickest amount of time and be in the Guinness book of World Records if he wins.

Dogs are the only thing he can make out of sand.

He has an OCD.

Like the beginnings of any good story, once we have a creative think about any random situation in life that may lead to a tale that needs telling, we begin to question the answer to our first question.

For example:

Why did his dog die? Was it giving birth? – Hence the small pup.

Why was he reincarnated in the form of a man?

What events led him to the competiton?

Why does he have an OCD?

A good writer always asks lots of questions and is not afraid to let their inner creative mind, think for itself.

Allow your imagination to run riot and enjoy every minute of taking a random event or situation in life and turning it into a literary masterpiece.

Snuggles leads the way – An inspiration to move forward

Hi everyone

Since her sister Peaches’s death on Friday, Snuggles has been both brave and an inspiration to me to move forward with my life.

After licking her sister goodbye on Friday morning, on Sat she had to undergo surgery to have a tumor removed from her back.

Since then, she has been eating almost all of her pots of veg, piggy mix, hay, green leafs and moving her igloo around on her back. Whilst I have been feeling faint with the blood from her wound, tearful, miserable and sad.

She is getting on with her life and is inspiring me to do the same. She is such a brave pig and a hero.

I love you Snuggles.xx

Have you got the guts to run your own writing business?

Hi everyone

I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you, that liked and shared my blog article “Have you got the guts to run your own business” on Sage One. It could just as easily have been called “Have you got the guts to run your own writing business.”

For those of you who are currently unemployed and interesting in starting your own writing business, this article explains how the Enterprise Club Start-up Training Course can help you, by finding out if you have got what it takes to start and run a business. At the end of the course you will be able to decide whether or not you have a viable business model with a business plan that predicts a profit. You can use this business plan to apply for the National Enterprise Allowance. With the National Enterprise Allowance (NEA) you get the opportunity to work with a business mentor and the chance of having a loan of up to £1000. I did this course whilst I was unemployed last year and learnt a lot of valuable information, knowledge and skills, that has helped me on my way to turning my writing into a business.

As you can see from the following screen shot, the article has received good feedback and lots of sharing across social media. In particular I want to give a humungous thank you to Louise from Inspire your business, who took the time to comment on the blog post itself on the Sage One website. Louise, you are awesome and your support is greatly appreciated. For anyone interested in running their own business, Louise’s blog offers inspiration and advice. The moment of truth – Photos of when I spoke to HM the Queen

Hi everyone

I know it’s hard for me to believe that I met and spoke with HM the Queen at St James’s Palace on the 15th of July. Therefore it must be hard for some of you to believe it too. Here is proof from the official photographer, Theodore Wood Photography, http://www.onlinepictureproof.com/theodorewoodphotography that it did happen.

I was at St James’s Palace for the Community Service Volunteers (CSV) 50th Anniversary celebration.

To see the full range of CSV event photos, go to the website and click on “Events” – “Community Service Volunteers” – “View Album.” I am on page 7 of 10. These two photos are the best photos of me and HM the Queen. The music on the website is very beautiful too.

Open Your Eyes

Hi Everyone

I felt I had to share this wonderful thought-prevoking poem with you by Diedre Blake because I totally agree that we must create our own reality of what we want our life to be. We can choose our mindset, we can choose our attitude, we can choose our actions and we can choose our path in life. The question is, will we?

Gli Occhi Aperti / The Open Eyes….

Until next time

What’s Holding You Back? – Skills and Experience – Beat Redundancy Blues

Hi Everyone

As you may know, I am currently working on my first e-Book about redundancy and helping people to get back into work and I have another WordPress blog to support this mission at http://www.beatredundancyblues.wordpress.com

I wanted to share with you my latest post from that blog, as the information is relevant to any job you go for.

So here it is:

Now that we have settled into the new year, you will probably have noticed a lot of posts about goal setting and how you need to take action in order to move forward with your life. These posts are an invaluable source of information and inspiration and they are absolutely right, if you want to achieve your desired outcome, you need to take the steps to get there by setting goals and then acting on them but in the next few posts I want us to take a look at what may be holding you back from setting goals in the first place.

Sometimes in order for you to move forward you must reflect on the past and assess the present to see what changes need to be made. If you keep doing the same thing then you will always get the same result. If you are not happy with the result then you need to change what you are doing and there is no time like the present, so what are you waiting for?

Let’s consider some of the things that may be holding you back.

Not having the right skills or experience

There is no easy way to say this, if you haven’t got the right skills and experience for the job role that you desire, in these difficult economic times, you need to either obtain them or learn to convert previous experience and learnt skills into transferable experience and skills and if you can’t do that then you probably won’t get a look in because the competition is so tough.

Do not be fooled by a job advert that states: “Previous experience is not essential as full training will be given for the right candidate.”

If the interviewer can get a person with previous experience who has the correct basic skills, the right attitude for the job and is the right fit for the team, then they will go with them instead of someone with little or no experience. When I was a retail manager I recruited my own staff  and I advertised for the experience and skills that I required and yes I still got applicants applying with little or no relevant experience and as time is money in business, usually I would sift theses applications out on first look as I had a large number of applicants. Of the applicants that were sifted out there may have been some that had the right attitude or were a good fit for the team but because I didn’t put them through to the interview stage I would never know this, so having the right skills and experience is essential.

When I wasn’t working, on the odd occasion I would apply for a job that was out of my sector and one that I had little or no relevant skills or experience in, just as I thought, I would get a reject letter or worse, nothing at all. Upon analysis, the reason I got a rejection letter was because I appeared on paper to have some of the skills and experience that were relative to the job and some transferable skills but obviously not as good a offering as someone who blatantly had the skills and experience in that sector and therefore I wasn’t surprised I was rejected and took it on the chin. When I received no reply whatsoever, it was because on paper there were barely any skills and experience relevant to the role for which I had applied, so why should the employer bother to reply to me when it looked like I had randomly decided to ‘give it a go’. An employer wouldn’t like this attitude and to be honest neither do I and when I became a manager I understood that and if I were to apply for a job now I would always tailor my CV and Cover Letter to the Job specification and that’s why I get responses when a lot of other people don’t, so if you are struggling to get responses, now you know the secret, why not try it for yourself?

If you want to gain the skills and experience to get a job you desire, you need to do voluntary workwork experience and you may need to take a course as well.

To read about what else may be holding you back be sure to read the next post on http://www.beatredundancyblues.wordpress.com   and whatever you do, stay positive.
